Introduction to the Safe and Sound Protocol™

Nervous System Support + 12 Coaching Sessions

Safe and Sound Protocol™ (SSP) is a provider-guided listening therapy designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and a greater sense of safety and connection. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and rooted in Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music to help the nervous system respond to cues from the environment in a calmer, more regulated way. At Sunshine Mind and Body, Inc., SSP is offered as a supportive wellness tool within a broader, trauma-informed approach to help clients build resilience, improve regulation, and feel more grounded in daily life.

The Science

The Safe and Sound Protocol™ is based on the idea that the nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or danger, often outside of conscious awareness. Polyvagal Theory refers to this process as neuroception. When the body detects safety, it is generally more able to rest, connect, think clearly, and engage with others. When the nervous system stays stuck in protection or defense, people may feel chronically stressed, hypervigilant, shut down, overwhelmed, or disconnected.

SSP uses music that has been filtered through a patented, evidence-based algorithm to emphasize sound frequencies associated with the human voice. This filtered music is intended to help regulate the autonomic nervous system, improve auditory processing, and stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays an important role in communication between the brain, body, and environment.

The goal is to help the body become more available for calm, connection, regulation, and therapeutic engagement.
